Life and Times of a Modern Day NDN Princess
Review: The Proposal

So me and ma Mo were walking around yesterday, and decided to go see a movie. We realized that The Proposal was doing a special screening of the movie yesterday so we went.

We ended up going a half an hour early to an already pretty packed theatre, which meant  I would have to sit beside a stranger. Turns out that stranger stank. Like B.O. She was a girl.

So the movie started and of course Ryan Reynolds looks absolutely amazing and let me say Boo to Scarlett Johanson for taking a hot Canadian away!

The movie was funny, there were parts in the movie where I was almost kicking my feet in the air because I was laughing so hard. The scene that everyone has seen in the Trailer when they are accidentally naked on top of each other is WAY funnier than they made it look in the trailer. Sometimes when comedy show all the funny parts in the Trailers it ruins it when you go see it in the theatre. But not this scene. The subtleness of one part will make you laugh.

So the reason I am writing this review is not about how hot Ryan is, or how funny it was.

It is what you all have seen in the Trailers. Betty White in a button blanket.

Now when I first saw this I was deply insulted.

1. Why is she wearing Traditional West Coast Regalia?

2. Why is she wearing Tradional West Coast Regalia?

Now as much as I love seeing Native Regalia on screen, I do not like people making fun of our Culture in any way.

So that scene came up, and one of the important facts before this starts is that Ryan’s character is actually from Alaska. So most of the movie is spent in Sitka, AK.

So there is Betty White in a traditional Button Blanket dancing and singing by a fire, while Sandra Bullock’s character walks up to her confused. The sounds out of Betty White’s mouth are wailing, not particulairly singing.

She tells Sandra to let it all out, and sing with her. There is a fire. Sandra starts to wail in a little voice and then gets into it and starts singing a rap song about balls.

So let’s just say I wasn’t happy. The scene was funny, but it was insulting.

But they redeemed themselves. In the scene where Sandra is trying on Betty’s wedding dress. They have an intimate moment, while Betty tries to give Sandra a family necklace. (It was Turquoise)

And Betty reveals that her family has Native Blood.

Now another thing I would like to say, about the whole dancing and wailing part of the movie, Betty says ‘Gunalchéesh’ which me and my Mo screamed at hearing. And reveals that Betty is of Tlingit Ancestry. I would applaud the makers on good research!

So with The Proposal redeeming itself in the end, and showing me many great shots of Ryan with his shirt off.

I say ‘Yakei’ which means Good in Tlingit. (My boyfriend is Tlingit, he is teaching me his language…Swoon..)
