Native Head dress Faux Pas
As a member of the first nations community (in Canada), I’ve begun to notice that the vast majority of these photo’s that I object to are depicting women. In Native culture, the head dress is worn solely by the male upper echelon of the tribe, and only during official ceremony etc. There are intricate gender dynamics as well as racial dynamics at work here, and although I see how aesthetically appealing a head dress may be to a stylist wanting something to compliment a mane of beautiful hair, it is quintessentially inverting the purpose. It makes mundanity out of something special, prized and worn with reverence.
