In Māori mythology, the first human being was a woman. Her name was Hineahuone (earth formed woman), she was the mountains and the valleys. The God of the forests and the birds Tane Mahuta, breathed life into her nostrils and she sneezed; alas this was the first breath of life “tihei mauri ora.”
When Māori meet, they exchange the breath of life through the touching of noses. The hongi means that you are strangers no more.
