Michelle St. John is of the Cree tribe.
She stared in ‘Where the Spirit Lives’ (1989) which earned her a Gemini Award. This is one of my favorite movies ever. My dad made us watch it when we were younger and her performance has always stuck in my heart. The portrayal of a young Native girl thrust into Residential School, and her trying to find her way in life always remembering her roots. Her acting in this film is nothing short of spectacular. This film, I think should be a watch for every Canadian/American in this world. Well everyone in this world, she is brilliant. This film is brilliant.
‘Apistaminum’ (For those who do not get that reference, watch the film!!!)
Michelle St. John’s also played Helen Betty Osborne, a true story of a Native woman who was murdered in Manitoba in 1971. Helen Betty Osborne was of the Norway House Cree Nation, she was murdered in the Streets of The Pas, Manitoba by four white men who brutally beat her, sexually assulted her and then murdered her.
I always will remember the scene where they sexually assault, it is seared into my brain. Once again, Ms. St John is brilliant.
I also got to see her in the play ‘Anna Mae Aquash’ and seeing her live was ever better. To be onstage as an Actor you really have to be good, cause everything you do is live, right there in front of an audience. Brilliant.
I had the pleasure of meeting her after the play, and she is so sweet. She is definetly one of my role models and I will FOREVER remember her from her amazing performances.
Musi Cho Michelle, for making Native women proud!
